January-February 2015 Link Newsletter

Message from your Adviser

Hello fellow Link,

I am really excited to introduce this first edition of the Ontario Link Newsletter. The name may not be clever, but I hope this will grow to help Members feel connected, highlight opportunities to get involved, and celebrate the activities that are happening.

Last spring, I started in my role as Link Adviser for Ontario Council. Since then, I’ve learned a lot about Link. I’ve found old Canadian Guider articles and newspaper articles about past Link events and heard stories from Guiders who made great friendships though Link that have lasted many years. These stories are inspiring, but only when shared. I hope this new newsletter will become a forum for sharing our own inspiring stories about Link, Guiding or life, with each other.

Yours in Guiding,

Susan Wray

Did you know?

Link was established in 1966, although it was originally called “Trefoil”.

This means that Link is older than the Pathfinder and Sparks branches. It also means we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2016.

Activities

Link activities that happened in 2014 included:

*Potlucks and board game nights
*Trip to Stratford Festival
*Sorting food at a food bank
*Working party at Camp Woolsey

If you participate in a Link event, let us know how it went!

Ask your adviser

Q: How does Safe Guide apply to Link events?
A: Appendix A outlines guidelines for adult-only activities, stating “Guiders are expected to apply the same principals of thorough forethought and safe planning in all Guiding-related activities”. In terms of paperwork, activity approval is not required for yellow level activities, but is still required for red level activities. If Youth Members, such as Rangers, will be in attendance, then full Safe Guide policies apply.

Feedback and Contact

Any Link Member is welcome to write an article for Link Connections, the national Link newsletter, or for this new Ontario newsletter. Topics could include a summary of a recent Link event, international travel experience, service projects, or how Guiding experiences enrich other aspects of your life.

If you have a question for the “ask your adviser” section, or suggestions for other content you’d like to see in future editions, please get in touch.
