Diabetes Canada initiative 2020

With the success of the 2019 initiative, GGCON has once again partnered with Diabetes Canada to provide a fundraising opportunity for units in Ontario.

In 2019, 50 units participated in this initiative. They collected 1,827 bags of textiles and 36,546 pounds of miscellaneous items. These units earned a total of $4,712.14 for their efforts.

What happens with your contributions?

  • 50% is resold through thrift stores
  • 45% is up-cycled (made into items like bags) or down-cycled (shredded and used as insulation)
  • 5% is refuse

To register for the clothing drive, please follow these easy steps!

STEP 1: Complete the registration form to sign your unit up. This form allows you to select your pick-up location and first and second choice for a pick-up date. Diabetes Canada will contact you to confirm a pick-up date, time and location.

Fill out the customized unit flyer and/or email template to share with parents, family and friends.

STEP 3: Collect donations.

 Helpful Information:

  • This is a pre-approved Ontario Council initiative - no FR.1 is required
  • Registration closes February 23rd, 2020
  • Pick-ups will be available from March 23-April 3rd, 2020 and will be scheduled between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.
  • A bag of cloth/textiles equals 20 lbs (full 67 litre garbage bag)
    • Collect 0-150 bags of cloth/textiles per pick up location = $2.00/bag
    • Collect 151-299 bags of cloth/textiles per pick up location = $2.50/bag
    • Collect 300+ bags of cloth/textiles per pick up location = $3.00/bag
    • Collect miscellaneous items (items not bagged, placed in a box) rate $0.02 (2 cents) per pound
  • Diabetes Canada will be providing receipts that will state how many bags of textiles and the approximate weight of the other items your unit has donated.
