Message from the Chief
I am very honoured and thrilled to begin my term as Chief Commissioner of Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada (GGC). This is indeed an exciting time for GGC as we move towards our 100th anniversary, and I can’t think of a better time to be serving as your Chief.
Girl Guides of Canada is the original girl-focused organization. From our early beginnings in 1910 to the strong and vibrant organization we are today, GGC’s commitment to giving girls the tools and resources they need to succeed has remained the cornerstone of our organization.
Over the last century, hundreds of thousands of girls have been touched by Guiding. They have had the chance to learn new skills, develop lasting friendships, build their confidence and leadership abilities and learn about the world around them, all in a supporting, safe environment. I was one of those hundreds of thousands of girls, and I know that I am the person I am today because of Guiding.
Our recently-revised Mission reinforces our commitment to providing girls with the opportunities, skills and knowledge they need to become the dynamic, effective leaders of tomorrow. Over the last 100 years our programs have changed to remain relevant to girls – and will no doubt continue to evolve into the next century. In today’s fast-paced society, the best way to remain relevant to girls is to engage them. I strongly believe that offering programming by girls for girls is the key to our success.
Our Mission also signals our commitment to making a difference in the world. Helping others has always been a key element of Guiding in Canada – and around the world. Through Guiding, we are giving girls the opportunity to take action on the issues they care about and to be responsible world citizens.
Of course, Guiding would not be possible without the commitment, passion and support of the thousands of women who dedicate countless hours to our organization. I have been involved in Guiding as an adult for 41 years, and I have had the pleasure of meeting many extraordinary women with endless energy and enthusiasm. As Chief Commissioner, I look forward to meeting and working with all of the women who work so diligently to deliver our programs to girls from coast to coast.
Yours in Guiding,
Chris Burton
Chief Commissioner
