National International Adviser

This is a remarkable opportunity for a Member of Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada to volunteer her time to lead the network of Provincial International Advisers in regard to international program initiatives for our Members.

Work of the Position:

To lead and mentor the network of Provincial International Advisers, which advises on the delivery and implementation of international education/travel for girl and adult members. You would be the key link between the provinces and the national Girl Programs Department. The National International Adviser (NIA) would work in direct collaboration with the national Girl Programs Department Manager and staff on strategies, communications and issues related to the delivery and implementation of international program activities and initiatives and in collaboration with the International Commissioner as appropriate.

In your role you will have the opportunity:

  • To lead the network of Provincial International Advisers, facilitate two-way communications between the network and the department, advise on issues, champion decisions, and provide key messages regarding international issues
  • Work with and direct the network to initiate and publicize international opportunities for girl and adult members and reviewing and approving applications for provincially sponsored international trips
  • To publicize international opportunities for girl and adult members and to review and approve applications for provincially sponsored trips
  • Work closely with the National Selections Team Chair to ensure appropriate selection of girls and Guiders to national sponsored international events
  • To promote WAGGGS’ activities, programs, publications, events and to disseminate WAGGGS’ information
  • Prepare information for the World Board as appropriate, in consultation with the department manager and the International Commissioner
  • Ensure appropriate selection and briefing of delegates to national international events
  • Support the National Safe Guide Adviser, Provincial Safe Guide Advisers and the International Safe Guide Assessors in the provinces with international Safe Guide aspects
  • Facilitate the International Travel Team’s (IC Team) work to organize and coordinate national sponsored trips
  • To organize and chair network meetings as required

Term of Position:

  • Three (3) years. The time required for the work of the position varies; approximately five to ten hours per week, on average, will be required

Report to:

  • Deputy Chief Commissioner – Member Services

As a National Adviser:

  • You may not simultaneously hold a position as a Director on the Board or provincial adviser or operational committee chair at the national level
  • You may also not hold a position on a Provincial Council

We are looking for applicants who possess the following:

  • Experience in, knowledge of and a passion for international programming and the direction of the international component of GGC
  • International knowledge, including experience and awareness of WAGGGS’ initiatives
  • Completion of the Safe Guide training module
  • Previous experience as an international chair or adviser is an asset
  • International Travel experience as a Responsible Guider is an asset
  • Ability to organize and chair meetings and solicit views, opinions and advice
  • An aptitude for thinking critically, methodically, analytically and procedurally
  • Ability to work with a team and independently
  • Initiative

  • Strong oral, written and comprehension skills
  • Computer skills - e-mail, sending and receiving attachments, Windows and common Microsoft applications
  • Responding to network members and others in a timely and responsible manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively via teleconference and e-mail

National Safe Guide Adviser

With Safe Guide being one of the most important aspects of Guiding, the National Safe Guide (NSG) Adviser position is an exceptional opportunity for a Member who has experience in and knowledge of risk management in regard to GGC activities with girls.

Work of the Position:

To lead and mentor the network of Provincial Safe Guide Advisers, which advises on issues related to activity risk management. The National Adviser is the key link between the provinces and the national office Adult Member Support (AMS) department. The National Safe Guide Adviser works in direct collaboration with the national AMS department manager, or delegate, on strategies, communications and issues related to the delivery, implementation, and application of Safe Guide procedures and guidelines. All network members, including the chair, are expected to abide by the details of committee membership as described in the “Fundamental Principles for All Committees”.

Duties of the Position:

  • As the leader for the network of Provincial Safe Guide Advisers, facilitate two-way communications between the network and the national AMS department
  • Solicit feedback from the network, summarize information and work in collaboration with the manager of AMS to determine the effective application of activity risk initiatives
  • Orient Provincial Adviser, advise on issues and changes to Safe Guide, champion decisions and provide key messages and solicit consultation as needed
  • Work in collaboration with the manager of the AMS department to strategize, set goals, confirm annual projects, ensure active and ongoing communication, and implement the work of the network as per the strategic plan
  • Work with the manager of the AMS department to promote procedures, guidelines, and publications related to Safe Guide, and disseminate information
  • Organize and chair network meetings as required - the network may meet approximately three times per year via teleconference
  • Keep the AMS department informed of current issues, trends and concerns in the area of activity risk management, the application of Safe Guide and related activities; communicating the potential impact issues may have on the network and field
  • Provide support for the development of tools to assist the assessors in the management of Safe Guide 2011
  • Keep informed of current issues and trends as they relate to risk management so as to be an expert resource to the manager of AMS

Reports to:

Deputy Chief Commissioner – Member Services

Requirements for the Position:

  • An interest in enabling and engaging others in supporting activities for girl Members
  • Relevant experience in working with different branches of Guiding and experience with group events
  • A strong understanding of risk management principles
  • Recent and relevant experience in a wide variety of GGC activities with girls such as community unit activities, travel touring, residential, tent and adventure camping; canoeing, kayaking and other water based activities, aquatic supervision and international travel
  • The ability to problem solve and excellent attention to detail
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel) and Internet access (high speed preferable)
  • Excellent customer service skills, effective communication skills and patience in working with others

Term of Office:

The National Safe Guide Adviser will serve a 3 year term.
