OPERATION OLAVE - What is it?

Operation Olave is an overnight hike sponsored by Girl Guides of Canada, Fiddlehead District, at Connell Park in Woodstock, N.B. Headquarters for the event is the rink area of the arena at the Ayr Motor (Civic) Centre. Rain or shine. Girl Guides and Pathfinders and their Guiders come from all over to make up teams of 4 members which compete to earn the highest total points for the night.

Service Clubs and Guiders set up all over the park with challenges for the girls. Because we are in a camping area, tents or campers are used and lamps are needed for light as the night darkens.

In past years, challenges have included these fun activities: identification of wildlife and provincial flowers; making of knots; dropping a clothespin from between the knees into a jug; portaging a canoe; shelter making; fishing (one member had a rod over her back and other told her when to lower or raise it to catch a beaver); team skiing; balloon busting with darts; use of communication skills; first aid scenarios; putting up a tent blindfolded; taste or smell tests; identifying famous people; whistling after eating crackers and ball throwing at targets.

Project challenges are set up by 6:30 p.m. The hike begins at 7:30 p.m. and last through the evening until 2 a.m. The girls then turn in, and project people turn in their sheets to Headquarters and are free to head home.

Many of our Service Clubs have returned year after year to enjoy the fun with new girls each year. They enjoy seeing how smart the young ladies are and perhaps enjoy trying to stump them too! Guiders patrol the whole park while the hike is on but often find time to try the challenges too, if they dare!

We invite your organization to come up with a challenge, no more than 10 minutes long, which you think might be fun for the teams aged 9-15 to try.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO PLEASE KEEP WITHIN THE TIME LIMIT SO THERE IS LESS CHANCE OF BOTTLENECK WAITS FOR THE GIRLS. Get a few people together and come spend the evening with us. We promise, you’ll have FUN! BE PREPARED IS OUR MOTTO SO WE ASK YOU TO BE ALSO. IT HAS RAINED VERY HARD SOME YEARS AND HAS BEEN VERY COLD AS WELL.  No smoking when the girls are present please.
