Book a Site or Equipment at Camp Dechinta

Camp Dechinta (meaning 'in the bush' or 'in the woods' in Dene Zhatıé, one of the Dene Languages of the Northwest Territories) is located 35km from Yellowknife, NT, along the Ingraham Trail (NWT Highway # 4) just outside of Prelude Lake Territorial Park, NT. The site features a rustic (no electricity nor running water) propane operated cabin, outhouses, tent platforms, two firepits and a large (20 ha) boreal shield wilderness area for groups to use.

Orientations

All users must have an attendee who has taken the Camp Dechinta Orientation within the past two years. For new (or refreshing) users, arrangements for a free orientation session must be made at least 14 days in advance of use of the site or user will be subject to an additional $100 orientation session fee.

Booking

Whether a user has booked Cabin/Full Site or Site Only, the entire site is booked/not available to any other users. The only situation where two user groups could share the site is for Yellowknife District GGC groups only.

Sites

Cabin/Full Site: Includes entire site; cabin, tenting, outhouses, and wild space (overnight capacity: up to 40 indoors, 44 in tents)

Yellowknife District Guiding groups rates:

Overnight booking rates: $15/person + $50/night seasonal/propane fee (Oct to Apr)

Day booking rates: $15/person + $50/day seasonal/propane fee (Oct to Apr)

Non-Yellowknife District Guiding group rates:

Overnight booking rates: $15/person + $100/night + $50/night seasonal/propane fee (Oct to Apr)

Day booking rates: $15/person + $100/day + $50/day seasonal/propane fee (Oct to Apr)

  • Cabin comfortably sleeps 20 (on the floor), but can accommodate up to 40, but reduces the amount of living space in the cabin
  • Picnic tables under covered deck and outdoors, tables and chairs indoors
  • Tent site included with building rental with 11 tent platforms; eight nylon dome tents are also available for use free of charge, but groups can bring their own tents if needed
  • Year-round and seasonal outdoor latrines which can handle only limited winter (October-April) use- groups must bring their own toilet paper and cleaning supplies
  • Two propane fireplaces (propane provided)
  • Groups must bring all drinking, washing, cooking and cleaning water
  • Propane refrigerator, stove, two propane camp stoves, griddle, and limited dishware, pots, pans, etc.; groups may want to come self-contained with any specialized equipment
  • Fire pit on site with firewood supplied
  • All garbage, recycling and compost must be safely stored (so not to attract wildlife) and completely removed at the end of stay
  • Limited cleaning supplies provided; groups may want to bring their own
  • Road to site is accessible by vehicle May-September; from October-April, only the access road to the cabin end of the site is accessible by vehicle
  • BBQ on site, groups must supply their own propane
  • Canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, life jackets, snowshoes, cross-country skis, and GPS Units available for rental in Yellowknife from www.jackpinepaddle.com, www.narwal.ca, www.overlandersports.com
  • Two playgrounds, not on site, within walking distance (750m)
  • Waterfront and beach not on site, but nearby at Prelude Lake within walking distance (1km); there is a boat launch, dock, and small, roped off, unsupervised beach area
  • Community swimming pool not on site, in Yellowknife
  • Geocaching available in the Yellowknife Area and nearby

Site Only: Tenting, outhouses, and wild space. Does not include access to cabin (overnight capacity: 44)

Overnight booking rates: $15/person

Day booking rates: $15/person

Non-Yellowknife District Guiding group rates:

Overnight booking rates: $15/person + $30/night

Day booking rates: $15/person + $30/day

  • No standalone site hut, the items available for tenting GGC users to borrow are located in the cabin's back porch, including two propane camp stoves, a limited number of griddles (groups must bring their own briquettes), and wash basins
  • Groups must come self-contained
  • Tent site with 11 tent platforms; eight nylon dome tents are also available for use free of charge, but groups can bring their own tents if needed
  • Year-round and seasonal outdoor latrines which can handle only limited winter (October-April)
  • Groups must bring all drinking, washing, cooking and cleaning water
  • Outdoor picnic tables, and party tent canopy that can be erected on double-wide tent platform
