New Guiders

We’re writing to ensure you have everything you need to complete the New Guider Learning Path. As you may know, the New Guider Learning Path is a series of five courses that prepares Guiders to lead their units. All Guiders are required to complete these five courses within their first six months of joining a unit. You can complete the courses in a way that works best for you. Choose the method that suits your schedule and preference – online, webinars, or a combination.

Online: Complete the courses at your own pace when it’s convenient for you. All the e-courses are available on Member Zone (under Training – New Guider Learning Path).

Webinars: Check the Alberta Council calendar for dates and to register.

Webinar and Telephone Training

The Alberta Council Training Committee offers trainings by conference call or by webinar from the comfort of your home at no cost to you. Contact any-training@girlguides.ca or any-webinar@girlguides.ca, if you have questions or need to cancel out of a Webinar training. For questions or to cancel from a Telephone training please contact haydon@shaw.ca.

Safe Guide Training - Webinar

Safe Guide is mandatory for adult Members to complete within six months of their Join Date.

Outdoor Activity Leadership Program (OAL) Adventure Camping

Have you completed the TEAM Tent Camping modules or have equivalent experience and are looking to expand your knowledge to the next step? Then this is for you!

The OAL Adventure Camping modules provide a formal training that will build your knowledge, skills and capacity for adventure camping which will enable you to meet the Safe Guide requirements for leading adventurous camping trips for girls.

Modules included during this session: Trip Design and Structure, Leadership Styles and Group Dynamics, Adventure Camping Gear and Adventure Camping Food.

OAL Camping - Modules 1,3,5,6

  • Dates:March 23-24, 2024 (includes evening session)
  • Times:Training starts 9:30 a.m. Saturday and goes until 1 p.m. Sunday.
  • Location: Calgary Area Guide Centre, Calgary
  • Registration Deadline:March 14, 2024
  • Cost: $62.00 + GST

Accommodation: Space is available at the Guide Centre for anyone needing accommodation Friday, March 22 and/or Saturday, March 23, 2024. Please keep in mind, it is floor space only. You are welcome to bring cots or sleeping pads.

Meals:You are responsible for all meals except for Saturday supper which will be covered in the Adventure Camping Food module. You are encouraged to bring some snacks and alternatives if you have food allergies or restrictions.

Registration: To register, complete the OAL Adventure Camping Modules registration form.

Commissioner Training

There are three streams being presented: Getting Started for new Commissioners, More Depth for second-year Commissioners and the Leadership Learning Stream for third-year Commissioners and Advisers.

Foundation of Your Position – Getting Started (January 2024)

Focuses on the core responsibilities of the Commissioner, including position support, long and short-range planning, time management, and succession planning.

Risk Management - Getting Started (February 2024)

Topics include mitigating risk when planning, with Financials, contracts, and insurance, and understanding GGC policies and procedures, and reporting Incidents.

Focuses on the financials, preparing budgets, long-term planning, and fiscal responsibility.

Gives you the District administration skills and knowledge needed to work effectively as a District Commissioner, as well as help you focus on the core responsibilities of the District Commissioner relating to District administration.

This session is all about Supporting Guiders – accessibility, performance, conduct, conflict management, and effective communications are only some of the items to be discussed as we move through the session to enhance your skills and understanding of the position.

Leadership Learning Path - Self Leadership (February 2024)

Great leadership begins with self-leadership. Grow self-awareness by identifying the skills and leadership style you bring and how you apply them to your leadership role. Consider how you influence your emotions, thoughts and behavior for a positive impact on your leadership goals. You’ll have the opportunity to identify areas of growth and apply strategies to help you lead yourself as a more effective and responsive leader. This course utilizes the WAGGGS Reflective mindset and Creative and Critical Thinking mindset.

Leadership Learning Path - Team Leadership: Building Teams (February 2024)

Participants will explore different leadership models and key components to building a strong team. They will also cover the importance of building trust, safe spaces and shared purposes, principles, and practices. This course will use the WAGGGS leadership model to develop a view of leadership as something everyone can undertake, rather than simply something for those at the front of the room or the head of a team.

Leadership Learning Path - Leadership in the Guiding Context (February 2024)

This course explores the unique nature of leadership at Girl Guides of Canada (GGC). As a national organization supporting girls and women, GGC is uniquely positioned to provide opportunities and experiences in leadership. Participants will explore how GGC's mission and vision, governance, structure, and focus on inclusive leadership support capacity building. Additionally, participants will partake in activities and discussions about how they can contribute to building strong networks, teams, and ultimately, serve as a catalyst for both girls and women.

Leadership Learning Path - Team Leadership: Navigating Teams (January 2024)

Participants will explore what to do when things go wrong and teamwork gets a little bit stormy. Activities will be centered around conflict resolution and problem solving, two sides of a same coin, as well as performance management through the lenses of feedback and coaching. The importance of trust in a team will be a strong through line from Team Leadership: Building Teams.
