BC Council Scholarships


Each year BC Girl Guides’ scholarship program recognizes our members' many achievements by supporting their educational goals and diverse career paths. Scholarships are open to adult members who are pursuing post-secondary education at a recognized college, university, or trades program. BC Council seeks to support members in their educational endeavours, no matter the career. Guiding involvement and participation are important criteria in the awarding of BC Girl Guides Bursaries, Grants and Scholarships.

Youth Scholarship and Bursary Criteria

General criteria for all BC Council scholarships and bursaries

  • Applicants must be active members of Girl Guides of Canada–Guides du Canada in BC.
  • Applicants must have been registered in BC Council for the past three years.
  • Applicants must be residents of BC.
  • Applicants must be registered grade 12 students at a BC secondary school (including public, private, home, and independent schools).
  • Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • All awards are conditional upon acceptance at a post-secondary institution of the recipient’s choice and must be used within 18 months of the date of notification. All recipients are encouraged to continue their involvement in Guiding.

Please review the scholarship- or bursary-specific criteria for each award. Recipients may be awarded a maximum of one BC Council scholarship or bursary.

BC Council Bursary

For active girl or youth members entering an accredited post-secondary program directly from high school who have shown a commitment to service in their school or community.

Amount: $1000 (10 awards available)

BC Book of Honour Bursary

For active girl or youth members entering an accredited post-secondary program directly from high school who have shown a commitment to service in their school or community.

Amount: $2000 (1 award available)

Elaine Killam Scholarship

For active girl or youth members entering a recognized degree-granting program at an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada directly from high school who have shown a commitment to service in their school or community.

Amount: $2000 (2 awards available)

BC Vocational, Trade, and Technical Scholarship

For active girl or youth members entering a vocational, trade, or technical institution to complete a certificate, diploma, or degree program directly from high school who have shown a commitment to service in their school or community.

Amount: $1000 (2 awards available)

Eve Pound Scholarship

For active girl or youth members entering a recognized degree-granting program at an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada directly from high school who have shown a commitment to service in their school or community.

Amount: $500 (1 award available)

Margery Dumfries Scholarship

For active girl or youth members entering an accredited post-secondary program in Canada with the intention to pursue an education or career in science, engineering, or agriculture who have shown a commitment to service in their school or community.

Amount: $500 (1 award available)

Dawnette Humphrey Scholarship

Dawnette Humphrey

This scholarship was established by the Humphrey family in honour of Dawnette Humphrey, a remarkably caring, kind, and compassionate woman who found joy in the sisterhood of Guiding throughout her life. Dawnette started as a young girl in Guiding and was proud to fulfill many roles in the organization, including a term as Provincial Commissioner for BC. To every role, Dawnette brought her calm and patient demeanour, her warm and welcoming smile, and her unwavering belief in the potential for Guiding to positively impact girls and women around the world.

To be eligible for this grant the applicant must:

  • Be graduating from high school in the application year.
  • Be an active member in good standing of Girl Guides of Canada.
  • Have been active in BC Guiding for the last three years.
  • Be a passionate community minded individual and a helpful responsible citizen.

Requirements

  • Scholarship will be considered for all types of education, including high school equivalency, technical or career programs and college or university courses.
  • The Dawnette Humphrey scholarship may be applied to tuition or other expenses such as childcare, books, supplies, and transportation.
  • This scholarship is conditional upon acceptance at the institution of the recipient’s choice.
  • The scholarship must be used within 18 months of the date of notification.
  • The recipient(s) is to continue her involvement in Guiding in whatever way possible.
  • Unsuccessful applicants may reapply.
  • Successful applicant(s) may reapply once only.
  • An applicant is eligible to receive only one bursary, grant or scholarship in the same year

Amount: $500 (1 award available)


Adult Scholarship and Bursary Criteria

The following scholarships are available for adult members:

BC Trefoil Guilds' Education Grant

To be eligible for this grant the applicant must:

  • Be 19-30 years of age in the application year.
  • Be an active member in good standing of Girl Guides of Canada.
  • Have been active in BC Guiding for the last three years.

Requirements

  • Grants will be considered for education of all types, including high school equivalency, technical or career programs, and college or university courses at any public or private institutions.
  • This grant is conditional upon acceptance at the institution of the recipient’s choice.
  • This education grant must be used within 18 months of the date of notification.
  • Successful applicants may receive only one adult bursary, grant or scholarship per year and may not receive the same adult bursary, grant or scholarship more than once.
  • Unsuccessful applicants may re-apply.
  • Recipient is expected to continue her involvement in Guiding in whatever way possible.

BC Pat Drugge Adult Bursary

To be eligible for this grant the applicant must:

  • Be 25 years or older.
  • Be an active adult member in good standing of Girl Guides of Canada–Guides du Canada.
  • Have been active in BC Guiding for the last three years.

Requirements

  • Bursaries will be considered for all types of education, including high school equivalency, technical or career programs and college or university courses.
  • The Pat Drugge Adult Bursary may be applied to tuition or other expenses such as childcare, books, supplies and transportation.
  • This bursary is conditional upon acceptance at the institution of the recipient’s choice.
  • The bursary must be used within 18 months of the date of notification.
  • The recipient(s) is to continue her involvement in Guiding in whatever way possible.
  • Unsuccessful applicants may reapply.
  • Successful applicant(s) may reapply once only.
  • An applicant is eligible to receive only one adult bursary, grant or scholarship in the same year.
